How am I tackling “learning the cloud”?

Conceptually, I can picture it in my mind: What is Cloud Computing. I can tell you about it. I’ve used several cloud service providers to create “Hello World”-type of work. Nothing too exciting to write home about.

My problem was, what is it that I should know? Cloud Computing is very deep and wide, how should I go about tackling that? When should I stop? Should I learn how to work with multiple providers? Should I specialize on parts of it? All of it?

So many questions… where do I start?

Like with all journeys, they start with the First Step.

Step 1: Pick a cloud, any cloud and open a free Developer’s account. If the provider you pick first does not have a free tear… move on to the next.

Step 2: Dissect and analyze each of the major components
– Geographical distribution
– Physical composition
– Map the network of locations

Step 3: Identify and understand each of its major components and services:
– Storage services
– Compute services
– Network services
– CI/CD Services
– Data transfer services
– Options of packaged database solutions
– Options for APM

I will periodically update this blog and narrate to you my quest about each of the steps above and the outcome.

I picked AWS

what will you pick? Happy clouding!
